Standardisation is a chicken and egg problem which makes innovation in the energy distribution a big challenge. The installations are linked to government requirements for the installation codes and for product certification. For example, in Europe a CE marking is required which means that product must be conform standards. On the other hand, standards are created by experience in real life projects. So, legally, it is not possible to build new systems without fulfilling the standards, but standardisation need input from actual implementations.
This is the reason why we did the installation first to research and learn from it and then contribute our knowledge to the standards. For me, the focus was on standardisation to build the DC market. That is also the reason why I contributed to many Technical Commissions and working groups to share our lessons learned.
To accelerate the DC transition, I’m active in 23 groups in total but here is a list of the most important groups that bring DC forward:
The IEC has a platform of thousands of experts who contribute to building the solid technical foundation, such as the International Standards and Conformity Assessment for all electrical, electronic and related technologies, that is needed by industry and governments to make products and systems work safer together, everywhere.
NEN is the Royal Netherlands Standardization Institute. It manages over 31.000 standards: the international (ISO, IEC), European (EN) and national (NEN) standards accepted in The Netherlands. More than 800 standards committees are active with over 5.000 standard committee members.
